If the firmware stored in the flash memory is different from what is on the disks, then the NAS will install the flash onto the drives. This will happen even if the flash is older (that is, it will attempt to downgrade in that case).

If you don't know that the firmware is on the disks, then it is safest to upgrade the firmware on the NAS to the current version before you begin. That's because upgrading is generally always safe, but downgrading to very old firmware might not be. Of course your friend has to agree with the update.
