It works just like every computer (and some appliances) I've seen in the last ten years. Having to hold the power button down for several seconds helps prevent accidental shutdowns. In the early days of desktop computers, they had toggle or rocker type power switches, and they were always getting bumped, shutting the system down at the wrong time.
