RAID 6 array not accessible

Hello, I'm returning to a problem that I couldn't solve 2 years ago and unfortunately because of other personal problems couldn't look into it until now. I cannot access my files in my RN104 after I moved to a new home, and described the problem in details here:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS-in-Business/RAID-6-array-not-accessible-after-moving-to-a-new-home/m-p/1672197

Sorry for providing a link instead of the description, I can paste it here if this is preferred. There are a few comments there too that may also provide more insight.

I've gone one step further and used ReclaiMe software to scan my BTRFS volumes and it was able to find all my data, so it's still there. I could even preview text and image files. Of course, I have the option of paying $200 for the recovery but when converted to my currency, this is just a real ton of money in my country. Since the hdds, data and fs are all fine I would like to kindly ask help here again, at least to know if there's any chance of recovering it through my RN104.

My first doubt is that I don't know exactly how to proceed. A few options in my mind are:

  • Booting up the NAS without drives to check the fan (I've put some WD in it, it was a bit stuck) and see if it reports the HDDs as missing. However, I don't know if this'll affect things in a worse way.
  • Booting up the NAS with all drives in their original positions. Last time I booted it up, I'd not removed them and all drives were red. I wouldn't know what to do after that, though.

If it helps in any way, the raid parameters found by the ReclaiMe software were:

"Block map is as follows:

1 2 P ?
4 ? ? 3
? ? 5 6
? 7 8 P

"

I guess this means that "blocks" (sorry if it's not the correct term) 1-8 are at least in one disk each and there are 2 parity "blocks" available in different disks.

Thanks in advance for any help.

When you booted up with all drives on all position did it boot normally without any volume? or got stuck in booting? I think it would be best if you can provide the latest logs.

The parameters you provided might be helpful with other utilities.

      Hi Marc_V , thanks for responding :)

I haven't booted it up again yet, as I'm afraid of losing data by doing it. The last logs I have are here:

      https://drive.google.com/drive/u/1/folders/1K1qSUkNC8BT9anBvUJ4PU4hT-9xET9zj

These had overheating problems because the fan stopped working (I did put some WD on it and it seems better, I want to boot up the NAS to check it out but I'm not sure if I should boot it up with or without the hdds) and the array problem. I thought that the array was lost because of the last rebuild or the emergency shutdown from heat but the ReclaiMe software showed me it isn't.

I'm guessing the emergency shutdown made the NAS software lose some information about the array parameters. Would it be possible for it to recover these automatically as ReclaiMe software did? Or maybe could I use the information I got from ReclaiMe to help it recover?

      Thanks again!

        Hello sectoid

Checking on the old logs you lost 1 drive (drive 4) and had some temp issues due to the fan problem you mentioned. I don't think your data is lost but since you are having issues with your RN104 it might be hard to rebuild it using that unit.

If you are saying that it booted fine with the fans running and you still have all drives, checking it for errors might be best before trying to rebuild it. I would still suggest going with Support for assistance on this one. Have you tried checking the drives if they overheat when connected to a PC? you tried them connecting with ReCLAIMe right? have you noticed any issues with the drives?

This has 3 years warranty but I think you already mentioned its past it's warranty limit right?  It's very unfortunate but I do think your data can still be recovered.
