Ready NAS strategy
Hi,
We are looking to update our SME storage, moving away from server based storage to NAS seems like the natural progression.
We have a single office environment (i.e. most users on the internal lan). all on the same domain/AD controller. Most use of the NAS stored files will be in the office, but I may have a coupe of users who will good quality access via specific laptops (i.e.we can install apps etc for access). Other users will then require external access on an ad-hoc basis, via a web browser would be fine. Internal and roaming users will want to be able to send public URL links in emails etc. Offsite backup is required, with both NAS wide disaster recover as well as granular file/folder time slip recovery to get over accidental deletes etc
From research so far the following seems like a sensible route to take:
1 RN314 onsite running RAID, access controlled via link to AD controller. Daily backups on a 2 week cycle (i,e. SUN(FULL),MON,TUES,WEDS,THURS,FRI,SAT,SUN(FULL),MON, TUES, WEDS, THURS, FRI SAT) run internally (i.e. back up to this NAS) for non hardware based disaster recovery. Snapshots running on all shares for individual folder/file recovery
1 RN314 offsite running replicate to provide off site backup to insulate against local disaster/mass hardware failure. This 100% replicate would contain the live data, as well as all the backup sets.
So my questions are:
1) Is the above best practice?
2) By using ready remote can I give good access to remote users on controlled hardware (i.e. a laptop that I can install apps onto etc?
3) How does this manifest itself to the remote user? another folder in explorer ideally.
3) Will AD security controls still apply to the remote users?
4) Can internal and external users send a public URL link via email? how is this achieved, right click on file and select Public link, like copy.com??
5) How does this manifest itself to local and remote users?
6) Using Readycloud I assume internet based access to the NAS is possible, is this controllable on a user by user basis? Will all user see the whole control panel? (I don't really want my CEO being able to amend back up jobs!)
That will probably do for starters!
Thanks for your thoughts in advance
Mark

- markdswanAspirantSorry, one more question.
Does the remote NAS need to be on static IP?
Thinking of siting on a domestic connection that has dynamic(ish) IP
