ReadyNAS 102 - 1 drive, want to back up / upgrade.

So, I have a ReadyNAS 102 that only has one drive in it.  I want to upgrade the drive... transfer files and remove the old drive and put two new ones in it.

What is the easiest way to do this?  Just install the new drive hot... will it automatically mirror?  I google searched quite a bit, but I didn't find a situation quite like mine.

Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks!

Have you purchased the new drives yet?  What models are you considering?

I think the best options for your NAS are the Seagate Ironwolf models, or the WD Red Plus.  Don't get the WD Red models (WD20EFAX, WD30EFAX, WD40EFAX, or WD60EFAX).

First, Netgear recommends making a backup (as do I).  So if you don't have a backup plan in place for the NAS, consider adding a USB drive to the purchase.  BTW, RAID mirroring isn't enough to keep your data safe.

Assuming the new drives are at least as big as the old one:

    1. Hot insert one new drive into slot 2 of the NAS (while it is running).
    2. Wait for the resync to complete.  The drives will now be mirrored, with no additional capacity.
    3. Hot swap the old disk.
    4. There will be two steps to the resync.  The first one will remirror the existing volume, the second will expand it.
