Just finished the same process on my remote location NAS and was successful using a Gmail account however, using a Me.com email address does not work, i.e., still gets error.  That tells me that there is something going on one way or another.

 

If Apple email accounts are not allowed then there should be a note/instructions/error message that ReadyNAS Alerts only work for Google and Microsoft accounts.  Not sure if this is an error or not but should be forwarded to Netgear ReadyNas technical folks for review.

The alerts generally do work with all email providers when the account and ReadyNAS are properly configured.  Two Factor Authentication is a problem for any device that is automatically sending emails on your behalf, so it does need to be turned off (or worked around with a device-specific password).

I'm not an Apple guy.  But Apple says the settings for SMTP are:
