ReadyNAS 314 - Disk replacement issue
Hi,
I recently started getting array degraded messages on my readyNAS 314. The system indicated that the ATA errors on bay 2 were increasing. The volume resynced automatically with my old disk again and was OK for a while, but the message came back again.
I replaced the disk on Bay 2 with a new one. However, the array is not resyncing or rebuilding automatically.
I have the array in a RAID10 configuration with 4 disks total. The new disk I insert in the "System/Volume" view is displayed in black, while the rest are displayed in blue. When I select the new disk, I see options to format (which I did).
How do I resync and get this disk to be part of the array? From the documentation, it appears that this should be automatic.
Thank you!

Assuming the new drive is at least as large as the other 3, it sounds as if the format may have failed and your new disk is DOA. Can you test it with vendor tools in a PC (direct to motherboard SATA or in a SATA to USB dock)?
If it's not the drive, then it could be the bay. ATA errors can be caused by issues on the interfacing hardware, too, and a bad bay could prevent successful formatting. I have 5 that were once in an EDA500 expansion chassis that all have over 1000 ATA errors, which stopped growing when I moved them and the ones from the main NAS to a 12-bay rack-mount system. The cause for me was the insane choice of a non-locking connector for eSATA (not Netgear's choice, it's the standard).

Thanks for the suggestion. I will give it a try and report back. Putting back the old drive starts a resync. I do not get any format errors on the ReadyNAS. The message on the system is that formatting completed (i.e. no explicit callout of errors or warnings).
