So I can not just drop the drives into a new NAS, your solution seems very long winded and costly as I would need new drives + new NAS caddy.

There is no compatible new NAS. Netgear stopped manufacturing compatible ReadyNAS back in 2011. Another thing to consider is the age of your drives.
Do you actually need a NAS?
If not, you could just copy all your files over the network to storage connected to your PC. 4 TB isn't much storage by modern standards.
