Was the disk volume using XRAID? If so you should be able to see the volume even with one disk failure.
What disk models are you using in the other slots? What replacement disk did you try first? What firmware is the NAS running?

Welcome to the community!
In addition to StephenB' questions, when you put the drives in, did your system logged that new disk/s has been detected? You can check this information under Status -> Logs.
