ReadyNAS NV+ v2: stuck at boot menu
Hello, all ... I'm trying to resurrect a ReadyNAS NV+ v2 which is stuck at the boot menu. Pressing the backup only reveals the "Normal" option - no other options are shown when I press the backup...

We first need to assure you really have an NV+ V2. Netgear used the "V2" designation differently in two phases of production, so it can be confusing. If your NAS is silver in color and has an internal power supply, it's a V1, regardless of any labeling to the contrary. If it's black with an external power brick, it's a V2. That's important, because the boot menu process is different on the different models.
It does sound like you have a true V2, so I'm going to assume that:
If the display changes to show normal mode when you first press the backup button, but then does not progress through the other options, then there is likely a corruption of the flash memory. If the flash isn't damaged, then a USB recovery can likely fix that. When the menu indicates Normal, does pushing the reset button again make it look like it is at least trying to boot?
The NAS would not "fix itself" with no drives installed. That is a good diagnostic tool, however. Does the display then say "No Disks"? Can RAIDar find the NAS? Putting in a scratch drive containing nothing you care about (since it will be erased) and seeing if it will boot and build a new volume is also a good diagnostic step.
If you see the Normal option without doing anything and it can't be changed, than it sounds like the backup button is stuck. I believe it should say "Boot Menu" before the backup button is pushed. (I don't have an NV+V2, but that's what others do.)

Hello,
As I said in my original message, I had inserted a blank disk and turned it on, hoping that would fix it. It did not. If I turn it on without any disks, the display doesn't say "No Disks," only "Boot Menu". If I turn it on with the blank disk (or the 4 I had in it before) it again displays "Boot Menu". The backup button is not physically stuck, because pressing it is what shows the "Normal" option, though pressing it again doesn't reveal any other options, regardless of whether I have the reset button pressed or not.
Can you point me at online documentation that shows me how to do a USB recovery?
Regards,
John

That almost sounds like the reset button is stuck. I misunderstood, thinking that you only got the "Boot menu" display when you pressed the reset.
Since the USB recovery process is different, please confirm that you have a real V2, as explained in my previous message.

The front panel clearly reads "ReadyNAS NV+ v2", which seems "real" enough for me. If it were another model, I would have specified it in my original message. This is my 5th NetGear NAS - I had one of the original Infrant units 15+ years ago, then 2 NV+ units, then the NV+ v2, and most recently an RN214. Each of them had emblems on the front panel that served to remove all ambiguity between them.
The reset button is not physically stuck. If you know how to do the USB recovery on this model, i'd love to read about it.

A lot of NV+ and Duo owners think they have a v2. That's because there are v2 or v3 labels on the back of their units (indicating minor hardware revisions).
So we are always careful to confirm the model here.

mdgm recently provided some guidance for the Duo v2 here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS-in-Business/ReadyNAS-Duo-v2-fast-flashing-backup-LED/m-p/2068559#M191027
I believe it is the same procedure for the NV+ v2.
