I am would like to try a USB recovery using the 4.2 recovery tool. Unfortunately, the only firmware it seems to recognize is the last 4.2.31 firmware. I have all the firmwares that were ever put on the system including the R4toR6_.6.9.5.bin file, but the recovery tool does not load it. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

The file name of the OS6 file has to have the same structure as that of the 4.2.31 file. Try naming it RAIDiator-x86-6.9.5 (or whatever version you're installing).
