ReadyNAS Ultra 4 - Shares no longer available

Model: RNDU4000 

ReadyNAS Ultra 4 [X-RAID2]

Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.31 

 

Shares are no longer accessable. 

 

When I log in to ReadyNAS Frontview as ADMIN, the [Share>Share Listing]  states, "No shares exist."

 

Prior to this, the share existed for years unchanged.

 

It looks like something was corrupted, because the SHARES are showing up among the list of USERS in the ReadyNAS Frontview menu, [Security> User & Group Accounts]. See image below:

The image above, each entry in the "Names" field with a blank entry in teh corresponding "password" field is actually a defined SHARE.

 

Actual, correct "Users"  and "groups" remain listed, intermeshed with shares in the ReadyNAS Frontview menu, [Security> User & Group Accounts] 

 

Any suggestions how to correct this?

Any ideas on how this might have been corrupted?

  • There are a couple of different causes for this problem, but the most common is that two disks have failed (which destroy the volume). Another is that there was an unexpected power failure (or maybe a crash) which resulted in an out-of-sync volume that couldn't be mounted.

     

    Are you seeing disk or volume errors on the logs page of the Web UI?

     

    From there you can also download the full log zip file, and look in disk_smart.log  That will tell you how what (and how many) disks are working in your system.  You might also look in system.log and kernel.log for disk or volume related errors.

     

    As far as solving it goes, if you have a backup then the simplest thing is to do a factory default, set up the NAS again and restore the data.

     

    The other option is to contact Netgear paid support.   Though there unfortunately is a good chance that resolving this would require their data recovery service.  https://kb.netgear.com/69/ReadyNAS-Data-Recovery-Diagnostics-Scope-of-Service

      Does the NAS show the correct volume usage on the home page of Frontview and under Volumes?

       

      If so, another possibility is that this could simply be a messed up Shares.conf in the samba config and the data may all stll be there.

       

      The shares being listed in the list of users is a carry-over from the legacy Share security mode that was discontinued several years ago. Frontview looks at the samba Shares.conf and if the system is not in Share security mode it realises that the shares are not users and filters those out. However if shares.conf is corrupt or blank it won't realise that the shares are not users.

      [Frontview>Status>Logs]  currently "No logs exist."  And, attempt to DL logs displays the following:

      "<payload>Empty No Support</payload>"

       

      mdgm Thanks for the response.  Both the Frontview landing page and the Volumes menu *do not* show any volumes.

      If the above indicates a lost cause. So be it. 

      I appreciate any assessment.

        There are a couple of possibilities here. 

        • The most common is that the volume is now out of sync due to the power failure.  That would happen if there were cached writes in the NAS that hadn't been written to the disks when the power failed.
        • The second is that a power surge either damaged the disks, or provoked a hardware failure.  If no other equipment was damaged, then this is unlikely.

         

        As far as data recovery goes, if you are skilled with Linux you can attempt to forcibly mount the volume.  If you can connect the disks to a PC (either with SATA or using USB adapter/docks), you can also use RAID recovery software to extract the data.  R-Studio is a reasonable option ( https://www.r-studio.com/ ).  Either way, there could be some file system corruption.
