ReadyNAS Ultra 6 dead, but can I salvage the RAID-5 and the data on it?

Hi,

My ReadyNAS Ultra 6 doesn't start anymore after a power outage. I suspected the power supply, and replaced it with the same model, but to no avail, still the same symptoms:
Pushing on the power button, only lights up the led for a fraction of second, nothing else. No sound, no spinning, but neither any smell of anything burnt.

1.
Anybody an idea about the cause? Motherboard? A fuse (but I didn't see any)?

2.
How can I salvage the data on the RAID-5 (flexRAID)? Can I interchange the disks on another ReadyNAS Ultra 6? And will the RAID config be recognized? Will I be able to retrieve the data?

Kind Regards,

Patrick

  • If you can find another Ultra-6 or Pro-6 you can migrate the disks.  It's best to start with a scratch disk, and match the firmware you had on the old NAS.  Then power down, and move the disks (keeping them in slot order).  The puzzle here is that it is an end-of-life platform, and often second-hand NAS have problems.

If you get a new RN316 or RN516, then you can mount the old disks and copy them off to external storage.  This is outlined here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29957/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDU1MDU0NTQ1L3NpZC84c21SdkdJbQ%3D%3D

You will need off-load the data, as OS 6 is completely different from OS 4.2.x - so you do need need a factory reset.
