RN 102 RAID 1 reconstruction takes ages with NO DATA

I've a readynas RN102 with 2 3TB hdd in it, configured in RAID 1.

I have NO (in fact only very few small files) stored on it (max less than 10MB). When I test hot swap to reconstruct the RAID from one disk to copy data to the other it takes ages (several hours!!! 8, 9 hours!). Is it normal? I was supposing that time for reconstruction was depending on the data size, not the HDD size which in my cas is empty. If it is not normal, do you have any idea why it is so long ? Thanks for you help.

  • 8 hours for 3tb resync is normal

if u use a faster nas 312 the duration can be shortened

The disks have to be synced sector by sector to rebuild the RAID.

  • It is normal, it is dictated by disk size not by space utilized - RAID1 reconstruction is normally done by a block-by-block copy.

    Hello tytou,

You only need RAID resync if there is a drive failure and that you have to replace it. Both file system check and RAID resync are a bit slow and read entire partition that can take a while, these things slow down more too when you use weaker processer like the ReadyNAS 100 series that has 512mb memory.

Here's an article that will help about expansion in case you need it in the future: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23133/related/1
