RN104 Coming up in safe mode, can access web i/f but login fails. Can't access via telnet.
Here's the history of the issue, questions at the end. Any help appreciated.
Before this unit was working fine, then at some point today users couldn't access SMB shares on the device.
From info on LCD, unit appeared to be looping trying to boot and quickly dropping out and failing.
Had to power off by removing power cable.
Initial attempts to reboot simply resulted in the short (sub 2 sec) loop of booting.
Powered off (cable again) then removed disks.
Powered on and Unit appeared to come up.
Then ascertained that I couldn't have any disk in as same loop started through trial and error.
Powered off, pulled all disks and left unit off.
2 hours later returned and after about 10 power cycles decided to try mem test and tech mode (of which I have no experience). Essentially unit entered boot menu and allowed me to test. Mem test seemed to run, just couldn't tell if it was correct as there isn't a light table for the test in the manual for the 104. It's there for just about all others but not the 104.Aborted and tried to enter tech mode. OK but didn't have ID and password for this.
Sighed, rebooted and this time unit came up after a long boot and said in safe mode when pressing power button.
Plugged in network cable. Gave me an IP but unit didn't respond to this from browser.
Rebooted unit cleanly - power button allowed me to initiate a power off after several screens.
This time could access the unit on a locally allocated IP address (not the static previously set).
Powered off again. Inserted all 4 drives and powered on. Long boot time and again on a locally allocated IP address. Still in safe mode.
Attempted to acces via web i/f but not accepting admin and password previously set. Nor did it accept root and the password mentioned a few times suggested for telnet access.
Tried access via telnet but doesn't accept incoming telnet on that IP address.
Any other ID's and/or passwords I can try on the web i/f?
Any way to get the telnet to work?
None of the other boot menu options seem useful apart perhaps from tech mode but I'm not sure where that puts me - presumably at the OS or a limited subset if I can get telnet to work with that.
How can I move this forward for diagnostics? ...or any other suggestions.
Up til now this has been a reliable unit that's been running for many years with minimal input other than keeping the firmware up to date - 6.10.10 currently.
While I have backups of the critical info, I'm 2 weeks out on that and there's other stuff on there that is also important for historical reasons that I'd like to get to if possible.

Update.
It suddenly occurred to me that albeit it says it's in safe mode it's acting like it's an default system.
Used password as the password and it took it.
Web i/f then says
ReadyNAS does not detect any disks...
they are definitely in there and inserted.
so what next?
Ta.

Power down, and connect the disks to a Windows PC (either with SATA or a USB adapter/dock). Then test them with vendor tools (Seatools for Seagate, Dashboard for Western Digital).
It could be that the NAS SATA hardware failed. A power issue could also be the cause. But I think it's also possible that one of more failing disks are locking up the SATA bus.

So, they are WD Red, so dashboard it was.
Installed each device one by one in a USB hub and all showing 0 data used (presumably because that's Windows data, which it isn't) but all are showing no SMART errors, no reallocated sectors and approx 84500 plus or minus some hundred apiece of power on hours which is about right for the service they've done so far. I'm happy therefore that at least the SMART data is being read off the drives and there are no immediate issues with them.
I'm assuming therefore at this point that disks are OK and there's either a power issue or a board issue with the ReadyNAS. The power brick doesn't show any outward signs, but it's a brick and as you can see has given 10 years service so anything is possible there. - Incidentally the ReadyNAS DUO, which is still the RSYNC backup device, is where I have retrieved all the critical data from. That's had another 5-6 years additional service if memory serves me right.
Anyway with the above results I assume that I need to find another RN104 chassis, or is it possible to use any RN device that takes 4 or more drives to try to recover the data?
Presumably also I need to set the same OS level to ensure compatibility with any control data stored on the disk?
...or is there a more general way to mount these drives in a Linux m/c?
Thanks.
