Bingo - that actually did it. Thank you very much!
The most recent firmware I can upload is 6.10.8 but this did the trick.
Choosing "sign in with google" now brings me to a google interface that asks me to confirm and allow the ReadyNAS to have access. The relevant parameters are then auto-filled and a test message can then be successfully sent.
I wish I could also get my old ReadyNAS NVX to also send email alerts but I suspect that functionality is no longer possible. It still works properly but I can access it through an old version of Chrome running on a XP virtual machine.

Netgear neglected to put 6.10.9 on their "check for updates" server. But it does have some security updates, so you should manually install it. Upload the zip from the link I posted, and extract the img file. Then install it using the manual update control on system->settings->update.
