RN716X Booting Problem after firmware upgrade
Hello,
First post on here, hope you guys and girls can help me out.
1 of our clients was using a RN716x for back-up destination.
After a firmware upgrade from the web UI the NAS device didnt come back up.
After an hour the customer on site resetted the device by unplugging the cable and plugging it back in afterwards.
After this the NAS seems to be in some kind of weird boot loop.
I will try to describe it's behaviour as best as possible.
1. I start with the NAS not connected to power.
2. I plug in the power cable and turn on the switch in the back.
3. The NAS its fan spins up to max, no screen info and then turns off again.
4. When i press the power button the fan spins up again to max and the touch switches light up shortly.
Netgear Storage is listed in the display.
After that the screen and switches go black again and from step 4 repeats itself.
When it repeats the fans dont stop and i'm not seeing any suggestion on how this could be power related.
I tried to make a bootable USB with the Netgear software but the NAS is never getting that far into the boot proces to enable it.
I tried using an other power supply but the same issue occured.
Even when let to whine for a hour, i'm not able to find the NAS using RAIDar in my network.
Any suggestions?
With kind regards,
Thomas
While the newer ReadyNAS don't seem to be quite as finicky about the USB flash drive as legacy units, there are still some potential issues: As the article states, it must be 32GB or less and be FAT formatted (NOT ExFAT). Not mentioned in that article is it must only have one partition (some have a hidden one, especially if they offer encryption) and not be USB3.
You cannot hold the OK button from the beginning, you have to wait till the backlight comes on, but then not wait too long. That sometimes takes a couple tries. NAS with the latest BIOS actually don't need that at all. If you have an old downloaded log .zip file, open bios_ver.log and look for:
/sys/class/dmi/id/bios_date :::::::::::::: 10/11/2013 :::::::::::::: /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_version :::::::::::::: 4.6.5 ::::::::::::::
If none of this helps, then there likely is an issue with the chassis.
Your drives can be moved directly to another OS6 system with enough bays, though it is best to assure it's on the same or newer firmware version as the old before you do. Assuming the volume was not damaged by whatever happened to your 716, it'll "just work" from there.

Hi Einsling,
Welcome to the Community!
Can you try booting the NAS unit without the disks in it and see if you will still get the same behavior?
Note: Please label the disk with its corresponding bay before removing them.

Hello John,
Thanks, i forgot to mention i already tried that.
With or without the disks, the same behaviour occurs.
With kind regards,
Thomas

Normally the NAS would boot up with a no-disks status.
This suggests that something has failed in the chassis. A USB recovery might be the next step. But that requires that the boot menu respond normally. Instructions are here: https://kb.netgear.com/29952/How-do-I-use-the-USB-Recovery-Tool-on-my-ReadyNAS-OS-6-storage-system
