While the newer ReadyNAS don't seem to be quite as finicky about the USB flash drive as legacy units, there are still some potential issues: As the article states, it must be 32GB or less and be FAT formatted (NOT ExFAT). Not mentioned in that article is it must only have one partition (some have a hidden one, especially if they offer encryption) and not be USB3.
You cannot hold the OK button from the beginning, you have to wait till the backlight comes on, but then not wait too long. That sometimes takes a couple tries. NAS with the latest BIOS actually don't need that at all. If you have an old downloaded log .zip file, open bios_ver.log and look for:
/sys/class/dmi/id/bios_date :::::::::::::: 10/11/2013 :::::::::::::: /sys/class/dmi/id/bios_version :::::::::::::: 4.6.5 ::::::::::::::
If none of this helps, then there likely is an issue with the chassis.
Your drives can be moved directly to another OS6 system with enough bays, though it is best to assure it's on the same or newer firmware version as the old before you do. Assuming the volume was not damaged by whatever happened to your 716, it'll "just work" from there.

Hello Stephen,
I tried to boot into the USB drive but the NAS keeps resetting.
The OK button is touch captive? Because holding this while the NAS is booting doesnt seem to do the trick.
Am i missing something?

Hello Sandshark,
Thanks for the extra information.
I tried a diffrent USB, with the specs you listed.
Created the bootable USB from the tool.
NAS seems to be responding to the push on the OK button but never gets into the boot menu.
Netgear storage Welcome is displayed, the buttons light up, i press OK and then the NAS seems to be resetting itself getting back to the original message.
We advised the customer to order a replacement NAS from us. A shame, cause this NAS looks pretty neat.
Thanks for the help people.

Did you have the drives installed at the time? I don't know if it's critical that you do, but that's the norm for the process, as it will also then install that OS version to the drives. Does the USB drive have an activity LED and you can see it's doing a lot more than just a quick access?
