Fist attach the new drives to a PC and delete all the partitions. (If on Windows, Drive Management will do this nicely).
Then - simply do a normal shut down of the Pro BE and remove the drives noting the bay in which each is supposed to go (I put a small stick label on each drive, some mark the drive). As long as these drives are removed when the NAS is shut down, they can be returned to the unit when shut down and rebooted without any problems.
If you are only going to use three of the new drives, then you can use the spare trays. If not, you can remove the normal drives from the trays, mount the ST32000444SS in the trays, install in the Pro BE and boot the unit. I would probably try only one drive at first, as if it accepts the drive, there won't be a long wait for a resync. If there are problem, or if you need to access the data on the normal drives, simply shut down, restore the original drives to their original bays (without any of the new drives in the unit) and reboot. It should come up normally.
Of course a full backup is nice. If the new drives don't work, you can always attach them to a PC and use them for a backup target using copy/paste. Then you can store the drive offline in a cabinet. I did that for years with older drives until I got my second NAS. Or you could simply see if they will sell on ebay.
