Saving Raw Image on each Hard drive using Reclaime size of entire array vs size of actual drive.
Hello.
I am trying to use a software called Reclaime to recovery from possible a hardware failture in a readynas.
I don't have enough free ports to just plug in every hard drive so I was going to create an image file for each hard drive and run the recovery software.
My understanding is an image file of an 8TB hard drive should be around 8TB.
The image files appears like it going to be the size of the entire array vs the drive of the hard drive.
Does anyone know how to fix this or if this is normal.
For example, the process was 20% complete and the size of the file is 7.2TB(and growing) on a 8TB drive.
When the process was 26% complete, the file size was 9.56 TB( and growing)
The size of the array is around 36TB. So it look like the raw image creation for the 8TB drive is going to be around 36TB.
Also, the hard drive activity light stopped flashing around the 7.2TB or whatever an 8TB drive actually has.
Has anyone here had experience creating an image file of a RAID hard drive or might understand what is going on here or how to fix it?
Thanks.

Something is amiss. You are correct that a sector-by-sector image should be about the size of the drive. The only thing I can think of is that you are using imaging software that is aware of the file system and not doing a sector by sector backup. In that configuration, the snapshots could be seen as separate sets of files, thus greating increasing the space needed.

Probably best to contact ReclaiMe support on this.
Glancing at the documentation, it appears to support both disk images and array images. It is possible that you went down the array image path.
