Some help

Could someone help me find any easway to attach my NAS Duo V2 directly to my PC using an Ethernet connection without using a router or switch? I want to use this besides a network tool but also as a portable storage device on work location without a Network. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks you!
Kevin

  • connect directly to an empty available ethernet port - with any ethernet cable (doesnt have to be cross over because of the mdi mdix ports) next set the ipv4 settings of the pc to

    pc:
    ip 10.1.2.6
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
no gateway but if you put one in it doesnt hurt 10.1.2.1

    nas:
    ip 10.1.2.5
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
no gateway but if you put one in it doesnt hurt 10.1.2.1

next from your pc you will access the readynas like so

    \\10.1.2.5

    or also

    \\10.1.2.5\sharename

like for example with the default shares that are made "backup" and "media"

    \\10.1.2.5\backup
    \\10.1.2.5\media

    or for administration

    http://10.1.2.5/admin

    note another way is this

when you hook up the nas to the pc with the cable the nas will not find a dhcp server (considering your pc doesnt have a dhcp server on it) therefore the nas will get the following address automatically

    ip 192.168.168.168
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    with no gateway

so you can set your pcs network settings to the following

ip 192.168.168.x (x being between 1 and 255, but cannot be 1 or 255 and cannnot be 168. so pick for example 10 or 11 or 170 or 169 - it doesnt matter)
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
no gateway or you can select 192.168.168.1, it doesnt matter

the computer can the access the nas like so

    \\192.168.168.168
    \\192.168.168.168\sharename
    \\192.168.168.168\backup
    \\192.168.168.168\media

    for administration:

    http://192.168.168.168/admin

note this way is probably the easiest to setup - it will use the default nas ip
in fact in real world situation to get to set it up with 10.x.x.x ip like at the top you will need to go through this bottom 192.168.168.168 procedure
you will access the admin page http://192.168.168.168/admin and change the nas ip to the ones stated at the top of my reply with the ip 10.1.2.6 for nas and ip for pc 10.1.2.5

remember all the subnet masks involved in here are 255.255.255.0 and for your setup the gateways can be left blank
gateways are only important for the Internet access

One thing to note with your setup your nas will not get internet access - no big deal -- but you wont be able to use readynas remote or readynas replicate or the automatic updates (for updates you will need to do local update , which is not a big deal, either way I recommend using the local updates rather than the auto. updates)
  • THANKYOU!

I have not had a chance to try this out but it looks solid. I appreciate the response! the unit has been functioning on on Network for about 2 weeks, seems solid.

    Thanks again
