Are you using FlexRAID or XRAID?  You can tell by looking at the XRAID control on the volume page - if it has a green stripe, you are running XRAID.

With XRAID it is automatic, as long as the disks are blank.  If they've been formatted, then you need to click on the format control on the volume page, to trigger it. BTW, you don't necessarily need to add 3 TB drives - XRAID supports mixed sizes (as long as they are at least as large as the ones currently installed).  The capacity rule is "sum the disks and subtract the largest".

In case you use WD Reds:  I don't recommend buying the current WD Red line.  These are SMR drives, and several posters here have had trouble with them.  So go with the WD Red Plus models instead - they are CMR.
