But, no ReadyNAS will allow you to add a drive that is smaller than the current smallest size in the array. If your smallest is 1TB, then all additional drives must be 1TB or larger. If you feel the need to use a smaller drive such as the 500GB you mentioned after the array has been established with 1TB drives, then you must back up all the data, insert the new smaller drive and perform a factory default. Then restore the data from the backup.
