Through Network I can view the drives but cannot access anything, files, films or music. But yes, I was getting confused with the 2. Am 99% the way there now so thanks to all who have contributed.

I didn't realise there was such a relatively big learning curve with these units. Having come from a western digital NAS drive that really was plug and play this to me is fairly complicated and the processes involved are pretty drawn out, overkill I think for my simple need for an ever expanding library of movies and music.

Netgear stopped selling the ReadyNAS you purchased back in 2013, and the final firmware release was in 2017. So far the issues you have been dealing with are a result of the 10+ year old ReadyNAS using obsolete protocols.
Though accessing the files from Windows should be exactly the same as what you did with the WD NAS.

I have a WD EX4 (also EOL) as my primary NAS. I still have and use my ReadyNas Duo to backup the WD. As StephenB says, the difference is in the age of the units and the underlying firmware. What was plug and play 10 years ago is now plug and "pray".
You said you bought it used and the username/password is unknown. It's possible some previous owner set security on the shares/files. You will also need the password to log into the Admin page.
Also, you said bays 1 & 3 have drives. Do you know if it always only had 2 drives or is it possible that 1 or 2 drives were removed before you purchased it.
In any event, since you haven't been able to store anything on it, a "reset/reformat" may be needed.

Thanks again for all the input. I got 6 hard drives with the NAS but 4 are unusable according to the readynas, displaying a plethora of errors. Anyway, I have formatted the drives and it is hopefully back to default. I am seeing a lot more options but cannot for the life of me work out how to store anything on it. I am a bit reluctant to attempt anything as I reset it this morning and it seems to have done it's thing. Will attempt storing some files a little later

The easiest way to use it is to map drive letters to various shares.

Having reset the NAS I am now getting device is offline please wait. Just tried one by itself and still getting the error. Active ethernet signal, drive fine.

Have it working generally good. Have tried with different drives and differing amount of drives together. Will only work properly with one drive at a time so that is how I am using it. Thanks for all the helpful replies
