Upgrade to new NAS

You'd have to resync them (and in the process, the system would reformat them).

Thanks for that, a rather expensive mistake on my part. I will probably back the existing files up to a spare drive, buy a new unit and let it resync the 4TB drives and then copy the files from the spare drive back over.
Does that sound feasable or is there another way?

It sounds feasible. You can also shut down, and power up with one of the original drives installed. Then hot-install the second 1 TB drive and it will resync. That would get you back to where you were. Then later on you can also copy the files over the network (for instance, using the backup job facility in frontview).
You could also exchange the drives for 2 TB models, which would be compatible.
