If they are used on a Windows PC, there may have been some permissions set that prevents the NAS from accessing. You can always connect them to the PC and than transfer the files to and from the NAS over the network via copy/paste. Or, you could reformat one as FAT32 and connect to the NAS (FAT32 will be a faster transfer than NTFS).
I used USB drives for years connected to my PC and backed up my NV+ via copy/paste over the network. I found that using them in this way was not significantly slower than directly connecting them. Later I moved to an eSATA external drive connected to this desktop for backups. Much faster than USB. When I finally got to the point of backing up my NAS to another NAS, that is the fastest way of all.
