what is the current firmware for the readynas 104?

The current latest firmware version available is 6.4.0.

Production firmware is currently 6.2.5 http://www.netgear.com/home/products/connected-storage/RN104.aspx#tab-support is the place to check. You can also check for updates on the nas itself.
There is a public beta as well (6.4), you can see the details here: https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta-Release/ReadyNASOS-6-4-0-T147-Beta-6/m-p/975186#U975186
Check the forum posts before you decide to commit to the beta. You can't downgrade after you install it.
