X520-DA2 not booting in 4312
I bought a used Dell-branded X520-DA2 which boots fine in one of my workstations but stops my 4312 from booting. All fans run at full speed and nothing happens.
Is there any way to make the card compatible? I tried the latest firmware available but nothing changed.
I found reports about these issues before buying but almost all of them said that updating the firmware solves the problem which it didn't in my case. But fortunately I found a solution by blocking the SMBus on the pci-e pins which works just perfect. I put some tape over pci-e pins b5 and b6 and the 4312 immediately boots up and recognizes the card without any issue. Currently my two 4312 are exchanging data at ~400MS/s 🙂

If you do some Googling, you will find that Synology and Qnap also have issues with Dell-branded NICs. I have had no issues with Intel or SuperMicro branded in my rack-mount ReadyNAS, but I did purchase a Dell-branded one and successfully installed it in an RN516. With Intel, then you also have to deal with needing compatible transceiver modules if you are using fiber, but everything is in the same rack for me, so I just use DAC.
How sure are you that the card is not counterfeit?
