XRaid on old ReadyNas 2150
I have an older ReadyNAS that I plugged in 8 years and pretty much forgot about it. Two 500 gb drives. I sort of understand the XRAID concept but I don't understand how if I insert a new drive, say a...

Your disks are in RAID1, also called mirror. Everything that's on the first one is on the second one. There is no master, they're just the same.
RAID provides disk redundancy (it's in the name), it's not a backup. To keep it simple, if you delete something by mistake on your volume, it's deleted from both drives (at the same time), so unless you have a backup, you can't recover it.
If you want to replace both drives by bigger ones:
1. Backup your data, just in case.
2. Replace one drive by a bigger one.
3. Leave the RAID complete resync (rebuild the new drive based on the other drive).
4. Replace the other drive.
5. Once the initial RAID resync is complete, vertical expansion should occur. You may need to perform a (graceful) reboot to trigger it.

Thanks for the clarification. Another question. I'm looking at the hardware compatability list, under legacy, and I don't see my model. I see a ReadyNAS 2100 and ReayNAS 2100-D but no 2150. Would it be sufficient to use what is listed for the 2100?

Netgear stopped updating it quite a while ago, so I think it's a waste of time to go there. Most the disks are out of production, and (if you can find them at all) are overpriced.
I recommend a WD10EFRX or a WD20EFRX. Both are NAS-purposed drives, run cool, are acoustically quiet, and will work well with the duo. If you prefer Seagate, go with the 1 or 2 TB IronWolf.
