I have a ReadyNAS 528X running firmware 6.10.10 (latest). When I try to set up a new encrypted volume, the dropdown menu to select a "USB to store key" doesn't show any available drives. I've tried t...

Why do you want to create an encrypted volume? Given the key has to be available whenever you re-boot the device, you're going to need a safe place to put it where it also won't be stolen if the NAS is (which is about the only reason one would want it encrypted) but is easily available. Given it makes the volume non-expandable and makes data recovery pretty much impossible if something happens to the volume, it has a big downside.

I agree, this isn't a feature I'd use myself.

Once the volume is encrypted, I was able to switch it from Flex-RAID to X-RAID and additional drives are automatically added and expanded as part of the volume. Thanks for all your input.

Even though you are in X-RAID, once encrypted you
- won't be able to vertically expand the volume.
- won't be able to expand horizontally using bigger disks
You will be able to expand horizontally using the same size disks.

OK, so I also learned something. That's a huge limitation on expansion, but at least you can do some.
But I still wonder what you think you are gaining with an encrypted volume.
