Why do you want to create an encrypted volume? Given the key has to be available whenever you re-boot the device, you're going to need a safe place to put it where it also won't be stolen if the NAS is (which is about the only reason one would want it encrypted) but is easily available. Given it makes the volume non-expandable and makes data recovery pretty much impossible if something happens to the volume, it has a big downside.

I agree, this isn't a feature I'd use myself.
