Once the volume is encrypted, I was able to switch it from Flex-RAID to X-RAID and additional drives are automatically added and expanded as part of the volume. Thanks for all your input.

Even though you are in X-RAID, once encrypted you
- won't be able to vertically expand the volume.
- won't be able to expand horizontally using bigger disks
You will be able to expand horizontally using the same size disks.

OK, so I also learned something. That's a huge limitation on expansion, but at least you can do some.
But I still wonder what you think you are gaining with an encrypted volume.
