Choosing a ReadyNAS server

Hey all!

My small little company is on the cusp of committing to Egnyte as our file sharing system, and as most of our users are local, we have decided to go with the "Office Local Cloud" solution via a ReadyNAS.

I'm not sure which NetGear ReadyNAS would suit us, so I was hoping you might help me decide.

Currently, we're running Windows Server 2003 and the file space we currently use is around 800 GB. Not all of that is 'active' - about half of that is archives, backups, and OS files.

What else should we need to take into consideration? We need something to hit our minimum obviously, but we're a small environmental consultancy - we don't have much money to spend on going over the top in any area either.

Thanks for your help!

  • So .. while I have the comparison PDF of all the Netgear ReadyNAS for use with OLC and have scoured these forums.. it would seem that these are the preferred models (with hard drives):

    ReadyNAS 2100
    ReadyNAS 3100
    ReadyNAS 3200
    ReadyNAS 4200
    ReadyNAS Pro 2
    ReadyNAS Pro 4
    ReadyNAS Pro 6

The comparison sheet for business use, does not show the ReadyNAS 1500. Why would that be?

If no iSCSI is needed - what becomes the difference between using a ReadyNAS 1500 and 2100, Pro 4 and a 2100 (or that matter a 1500)?
  • The ReadyNAS 1500 is a newer NAS model that was introduced earlier this year, as a lower-end 1U rackmount option.
It supports 1TB and 2TB drives, up to 4TB and 8TB respectively (similar to 2100).

The main differences are that, the ReadyNAS 1500 has a 32bit Intel Tolapi 1GHZ versus higher-end ReadyNAS models which have Intel Dual Cores.
The 1500 also only supports NAS protocols, versus higher-end models that support NAS and iSCSI SAN.

So in relation to running Egnyte, the ReadyNAS Pro family and 2100+ are recommended models due to their processing power. While the 1500 could "technically" run Egnyte, there would be a performance drop when transferring/processing large data sets.
