"Error" Software caused connection abort" - Readynas Remote

Yesterday I was using Readynas Remote for the iPhone without any issues. Today I am getting this "Error - Software caused connection abort" after the iPhone connects to the NAS and I get the "Reading Shares" dialogue, it hangs and this error pops up. I re-installed the iPhone app, removed and added my profile from the remote settings on the NAS and also reinstalled the firmware, but I am still getting the same error. One more thing. If I try to connect again after getting this error I get a different error - "Invalid host". Any suggestions to solve this?

  • Thanks Greg,
Unchecking the Encryption option did resolve this issue, however I find it a little bit unsettling that I cannot securely connect to the ReadyNAS. Do you think this is this a problem in the ReadyNAS firmware?
  • Hi -

I am glad this worked. I completely understand your concern about security. I am not sure why encryption has to be disabled, but so be it. I think the issue is either due to firmware or simply the lack of robust software. If security is a concern I would NOT use the ReadyNAS Remote client since encryption has to be disabled. Instead I would do the following.

    1. I would use backup software that supports encryption when writing to the ReadyNAS. I personally use Memeo which does support encryption.

    2. In regards to accessing the data I would NOT use Netgear's embedded FTP server since it does not support SFTP. Their suggestion is to modify the listening port to something other than the default, which does nothing for security. Instead I would use HTTPS, which the ReadyNAS DOES support natively and create your own SSL key. That way if you need to access your data from out on the Internet the channel will be encrypted.

    Hope this helps.
  • Greg,
Thanks for all of your help. It seems Netgear got on top of it this time and released a new version which fixed the issue. I will certainly keep your suggestions in mind for the time there is an upgrade, as this is bound to happen again.
