I found Netgear and Synology had pretty much the same hardware for consumers. Maybe not for pro products.
So your question is not why it is not integrated to the interface but rather why Netgear didn't do it's own plugins like they did for the antivirus, syslog or radius ? If so, I have no answer for you. Maybe they had a specific roadmap to follow and will integrate things later (with 6.2 ? ) but wanted basic functions to work and be tested extensively before they did. Maybe they just didn't have enough people to do it (they clearly have the skills). Maybe they thought of it as a "not important" thing. Mail and DNS can be complicated things to implement if they want to do home made versions with full integration within the OS (when a client connects to the NAS the DNS gets updated, mail synchronization across ReadyNAS units, Personnalized web interface...). Maybe they are cutting deals with other manufacturers like zimbra ? I don't know.
I do know that they forgot to integrate some stuff like disk spin down which makes me think they release their OS in a hurry and wanted to do the basics first but do it well. I believe they have good surprises for us in 6.2.0 but since I have no more insight than you do, I just can't be sure.
