ReadyNas Duo v1 - Custom OS
I have an old ReadyNas Duo v1 with raid 0 (4tb - x2 2tb) that I want to use as a 3rd level backup location and has anyone installed a custom os on this NAS?

I use mine as is. My primary NAS is a WD EX4 (4x2tb Raid 5, also EOL). I use my Duo (2x2tb Raid 1) to backup my EX4. I also have a USB drive connected to the Duo so once the EX4 is backed up, I run another set of backup jobs to write to the USB. My EX4 is also on a UPS.
My Duo is on a power schedule. So it fires up, runs the jobs, then powers down. Really "critical" files are also backed up to various cloud storage systems, so my important files are safe from anything short of an asteroid strike. If I have to bug out and have time to grab my bag, I can simply grab the USB.

I also use mine as is. (FWIW as a third level backup of some shares). Mine is running two 2 TB JBOD volumes.
Like you, mine is running on a power schedule (as are my other backup NAS).
But truthfully, I keep my Duo (and my NV+) in service simply because they are still working ok (and because I figure you can never have too many backups). When they fail, I won't attempt to repair or replace them.

I also use cloud backup for disaster recovery.

Thanks for the info.

Not that I know of. I have seen some posts from people who tried and failed.
You are dealing with a 20 year old custom SoC that was (AFAIK) only used in early ReadyNAS.

Yes old hardware 😞
I suppose the main issue I would like to try and fix are the smb and tls issues, at least then I wouldn't need any special actions to interact with it
