You won't get anything close to SSD speeds, but you can connect the drive to the NAS USB port.
How is it formatted?

It's a NVMe drive, it can be formatted.

If the files on the NV+ are small enough, then I suggest FAT32.
NTFS would work no matter how large the files are, but it will much much slower on the NV+.

StephenB thanks you for your help.
I'm getting the following message when trying to shutdown -r now:
init: /dev/initctl: No such file or directory, so I'm using the reboot command.
I'm having trouble initializing the flash drive , I have only tried the front usb port, but I don't see it in Fdisk.
