RSS with TRANSMISSION with PUSH NOTIFICATIONS

Hi all,

First post - stumbled accross this forum via a simple google search.

I figured i'd do my bit to help anyone else who might of had issues with their NAS - just as i did.

I recently bought a READYNAS NV+ V2 with 4 X 3tb Seagate ST3000DM001 drives.

After my initial issues of drives being detected and after a re-sync and striping were performed, i did a reboot. Unfortunately i had errors appear on the disk during startup and when a volume check was ran agsint the disks the NAS continuously displayed errors when you were logged in through the admin console.

I believed something was really wrong with the unit but didn't think that the drives were bad as the health checker on the drives through the Readynas console displayed they were OK.

I had a long battle of self discovery (netgear) tech support were of limited help it was discovered i received 2 DOA drives (which i tested with seatools) - thanks alot seagate....but since installing the new drives the unit has been performing really well...touch wood.

On to getting to know the NAS device I found the actual netgear remote app of limited use on the iPhone / iPad and proceeded to install filebrowser and opened up SMB on 445 - now im happy!

Now comes my need for bit torrent. I've installed transmission but have found it is very limited. My bliss is to have my torrents be imported via RSS and to have push notification sent to my idevice using prowl (growl) - just so i know when my favourite shows have been added for download and when they are complete for me to watch - just as i do on my PC i have on now.

Can anyone advise me on what i need to do or the best way to have this setup so it can all run from my NAS - this way i can retire my PC:) - im sure this has been done by others in the past.

Thanks in advance,
Peter

  • I don't know if there's an add-on for the NV+ v2 already, but I use Automatic to download from RSS feeds on my Ultra 2. It checks the feed every 30 mins and adds the torrents (via filters) to Transmission.

By default, Transmission (for the x86 and sparc models) sends an email when it finishes downloading. The option is probably also available on the ARM-version.

Lastly, here you can find several remote administration apps (also for iphones) to control Transmission. I know Transmission-remote-dotnet (for Windows) has RSS support and gives me messages when a torrent finishes. Some of the iSomething apps might also have those features.
  • Thanks JaronG.

That page you suggested for addons and remotes for transmission looks like a good start for some weekend fun - thanks for that.

Being a NAS newbie i plunged into buying this NAS and after considering what little support there is for ARM - i am quietly dissapointed in the purchase. These post purchase addons are what add true value to the device after purchase.

I like the idea of emails - happy for those to be the notifications that one gets but i'll have to have a play with transmission.

If anyone out there could suggest a cool, free way for RSS feeds to work with transmission on an ARM platform - please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Peter
  • The arm models are pretty new and the community add-ons are just starting up. There's a huge amount of add-ons for the sparc and x86 models and in time, the amount of add-ons for the arm models will reach that number too.
  • Hi, I bought the same NAS and also got a bit dissapointed of the lack of addons and help for the nv+ v2 model.

Just wondering if you had solved the problem somehow? Have you found any script or any "automatic" way to add torrents to your NAS?
  • So, I finally got RSS with transmission with growl push notifications working on the readynas nv+ v2. I got tired of waiting for a solution and took matters in my own hand. I currently use it to download a bunch of TV shows from a private torrent sites rss feed.

After som forum scooping, I found out that the application Automatic was not available for the ARM platform. I messaged WhoCares? and asked him if there was any plans to port Automatic to the ARM version and he was kind enough to send me a beta version of it for ARM. I tried to set it up but found out it had a problem that you can't specify the path of your downloaded stuff and there is no support for notifications. As I use my NAS as a XBMC media server, I have all the shows in specific folders and all my movies in another folder. So after additional reading in the forum, the solution was flexget. It requires that you SSH into the NAS and execute commands manually. Unfortunately their readynas guide is for the sparc platform, but with some modifications on the installation you could actually get it to work on the ARM platform (im using it).

So I just followed this guide http://flexget.com/wiki/InstallWizard/ReadyNAS

Follow all the instructions, but exchange the ./configure --build=sparc-linux to ./configure --build=arm-linux for both the sqlite and python installation.

There also was some commands that was unrecognized but all you have todo is to

    apt-get install "missing command"

    in order to use it.

Now I can use the NAS as I originally intended!

      Hi,

      Draggin up an old thread.

I tried recently to put Flexget together, but stuffed things up completely and had to factory reset my NAS, loosing all my data in the meantime.  Oh well, these things happen.

But, being persistant, further searching brought me to this thread.  I like the idea of build=arm-linux instead of build=sparc linux.  I did not think of that, as I do have a ReadyNAS 102 ARM device. duh :smileyfrustrated:

I had most of my dramas installing Python.  Everytime I was missing some dependency or command or whatever, I tried installing myself.  Thats where I undone things I think, just got way out of control!  Maybe build=arm-linux will help in this area?

Another question.  I have MySql Server installed (by Poussin) to host the database for my Kodi (XBMC) library.  Do I still need to install sqlite?  Will it conflict with MySql Server?

      Thanks
