Thanks for the replies.
I have solved the problem in a way which was suggested by mdgm in private messages, a way similar to the one explained at
http://readynas.sphardy.com/2010/09/restoring-ssh-access_4574.html
1- From my own ubuntu machine (with a running ssh server) I have zipped the /etc/ssh folder.
2- uploaded the zipped file to the readynas through the frontend.
3- Reinstalled the RootEnable add-on.
