Transmission and VPN on a Readynas ?

Hi All,

Firstly, I'm new to a NAS and very green so if you can help me please treat me like an technical newbie ! I purchased a ReadyNAS after owning x2 WD My Book Live's and losing ALL my data twice... a decent NAS seemed like a much better idea. I use it for basic home storage & also to Torrent. My isp throttles bittorrent so I am aiming to setup a VPN and aim all Transmission traffic via it.

The instructions the site has suggested are these :-

1.Follow install instructions of pptp client: http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/documentation.phtml
2.Create configureation file /etc/ppp/tp.pptp with following content:
lock
noauth
refuse-eap
refuse-chap
nobsdcomp
nodeflate
require-mppe-128
nodetach
user YOU_USERNAME
debug
mtu 1452
mru 1452
lcp-echo-interval 10
lcp-echo-failure 3
3.Create configuration file /etc/ppp/peers/tp with following content:
pty "pptp vpn.torrentprivacy.com --nolaunchpppd"
file /etc/ppp/tp.pptp
4.create or add lines to the /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file, which holds usernames and passwords:
USERNAME PPTP YOUR_PASSWORD *
Finished!
How to connect:
1.Open the Terminal as administrator
2.Type: pppd call tp

But I dont get it. Would this even work on a READYNAS ?

If you could help I would be very grateful.

  • I was looking for the same solution as you, but dont use/understand linux so i went with this solution

    1. Get the Qbittorrent addon for your readynas.

    2. get a vpn from PIA (private internet access). Good reviews, fast speeds and cheap.

    3. generate a username password for socks5 proxy by logging into the PIA website.

    4. when you have the qbittorrent webui open , put in the correct details. I used this guide as it is similar. https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/434/utorrent-install-instructions-for-proxy-proxychecker

Now all torrents will be routed through the proxy and your isp wont know/throttle. Ive got bt infinity ( in the uk) and get 90mb download speeds on torrents from private trackers.

The one downside is that for some reason torrents over 100kb wont load on qbittorrent. the bug is known so hopefully an update will fix the issue.

    Hope this helps
  • Thanks for your response.

From what I understand the security offered by a socks5 proxy and a VPN are very different. The ISP still shapes proxy traffic but cant if I'm using a VPN. I really want to setup a secure VPN connection to the readynas.

    Thank you anyway :)
  • I use a VPN connection from PIA - would really like my ReadyNAS to use the same connection / service that I use from my laptop but I can't seem to find any decent information around the internet as to whether it's possible. Most information / discussion I've read seems to be about setting the ReadyNAS up as a VPN server which isn't what I'm after - I want the ReadyNAS to connect to the internet via a VPN.

Other suggestions involve somehow setting up the home router to use the VPN connection (and by extension everything using the home LAN would use it too) but, again, have found a distinct lack of information / documentation, or at least, maybe information that involves technical expertise that I do not have. The router suggestion is further compounded because most routers that come from ISPs don't easily offer themselves up to configuration, if at all and the suggestion seems to involve forking out upwards of £80 for a new router that does.

If you got any further with finding answers with this, would really like to know. Thanks.
