UPS cable compatibility: ReadyNAS NV+ to APC SmartUPS 420 (SU420NET)
I have a ReadyNAS RND4410 v3 (4x1TB) with USB connectors that I presume can be used for UPS connectivity, and an APC SmartUPS 420 (model SU420NET) which came with a double-ended RS232 cable and a sof...

No, you cannot connect an RS232 UPS to a ReadyNAS. Just a cable will not work on anything, the voltages and protocols are entirely different, and there is no driver in the NAS for a USB to RS232 converter.

Thanks for the reply Sandshark. It is clearly not worthwhile trying to cobble-up a usb-rs232 adapter when I know nothing about the different communication protocols and interface.
I'm marking your reply as the accepted solution to my question, but I wonder if you or anyone else can provide a link to ReadyNAS V+ (RND4410) compatible UPS models? I notice there a couple of APC UPS units for sale locally (APC 500 and APC ES 350), the former having a usb interface and the latter having an ethernet LAN connection. Would either of these units be compatible?

Netgear does not maintain such a list. The ReadyNAS utilizes NUT for UPS monitoring, and you can consult their list (https://networkupstools.org/stable-hcl.html ). Just recognize that the ReadyNAS uses an older version, so don't select something that requires a recent NUT update to work.
