AirPrint support

Is there any chance that AirPrint support could be added so that a printer attached to the ReadyNAS could be used with iOS 4 devices? Is this possible, and/or under investigation?

Thanks!

  • Just get Printopia and install it on a Mac on your network. I installed it on my Mac mini server that I use as a HTPC and I can print from iPads to a wireless network printer. I have found that the MMS and Apple TV2 is a great combo that will only get better as soon as aTVFlash releases there software for 4.2.1 and ATV2 4.1 to enable a Plex client on the ATV2.
I got a bit off topic but I hope that this helps others to "cut to the chase"

  • I currently have plenty of Macs on my network but none that I want to be on full-time, 24x7x365. My ReadyNAS is already online all the time, and my printer is hooked up to it for that reason.

Since my Canon printer is forced to use the Gutenprint CUPS drivers when printing through the ReadyNAS, I’m already at a disadvantage when it comes to printing. (Printouts using the standard Canon drivers when hooked to a Mac directly are much better, but then I have to leave that Mac on for my other Macs to print to it.) If there is no hope or plans to have AirPrint for the CUPS server in the ReadyNAS, that’s one less useful function that the ReadyNAS performs for me.

Getting a Mac mini in addition to the ReadyNAS is not an option at this time. And frankly, if I did that, I’d probably be more likely to replace the ReadyNAS with it.

I understand your concerns. I just gave the above recommendation after trying for over a year to install VB (and other add-ons) to use the RNPP for things that are not optimally supported or not at all supported.
I have found that the ReadyNAS is best used as a large file repository that can be accessed locally or remotely. The Mac Mini is great but does lack storage which is why I primarily use the RNPP. I am an "advanced home user" and enjoy the challenge of the RNPP but do not do IT for a living.
    Hope this helps.

To be 100% honest and cutting right to the chase: I try to cut down on machines running 7/24, not adding - so, I'd like to jump on the bandwagon and request Airprint services for the ReadyNas + platform (sparc). If I have to run additionally a Mac 7/24 then what may be the point of the ReadyNAS server?

Not to belabor the point and be argumentative, I was just trying to give some pointers based on my experience using the RNPP for the last 16 months.

I too would like to see the RN act as more than a file server, however I found that adding a MMS to the mix just made things a lot easier to accomplish. Additionally a Mac Mini Client version only has a 320 GB drive standard and the MMS has two 500 GB drives.

I found that once I started using Plex and saving video that the RNPP was great. So far I have filled up 3TB out of 9 TB for data and have 2TB reserved for Time Capsule backups which is about half used. I have not been disappointed at all with this setup.
Hope this helps and explains things better.

  • All,

Looks like someone has produced a general guide for getting Airport services running on Ubuntu...
    http://www.fiorellonj.com/wp/2010/11/airprint-using-ubuntu-server-and-a-network-printer/

..and at the end of this thread some one has attempted to get this going on a ReadyNAS NV+ (with root access obviously)... but not reported whether or not it worked....

Anyone care to give this a try?

Of course it would be even nicer to having this as an addon...or a standard service!

    Cheers
  • As I noted in a related topic, I'm interested in this as well and would be happy to pay something for an add-on if needed. However, I would like the ReadyNAS to act as a print server for a network connected device. In my case I have a Brother color laser printer connected to Ethernet, and it would be great if my Ultra 4 Plus could relay AirPrint jobs.
