Backup Time Machine Share to USB. Can it be done?
Hi. First post, but have been browsing since March and have been using Time Machine since then also to backup to NAS.
Yes, I've read the wiki at http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq also.
Issue 1:
Upgraded to OS X Lion last weekend and Time Machine to NV+ broke. That's OK, want to install 4.1.8 Beta & update some plugins but after reading other threads am proceeding with caution.
So back everything up off the NAS -> Issue 2.
Issue 2:
Plugged in USB device, set up backup jobs for each share after creating destination folders server_name/etc on the USB.
Jobs appeared to run OK but the backup folder is empty on the USB. Also ran in about 2 seconds, which gave me a nudge.
Browsing other threads I see that the advertised backup via USB does not apparently apply to sparse bundles, especially on the NV+. Is that true?
If not true, how do I get it to work?
Has anyone used a Mac formatted external USB drive to do this? Would that work?
Understandably, I do not want to upgrade to what appears to be an unstable Beta without ensuring all my data is double backed up. And my Mac needs a backup now, possibly even more than I do a haircut... 8)
Cheers,
Kevin.

- media -> server_name/media
- backup -> server_name/backup
- user -> server_name/user

- pjc1AspirantTime Machine isn't in any of the shares you backed up. Instead of backing up the shares individually, you need to back up either:
- Volume: c (which backs up all the shares, including the hidden .timemachine share)
or- Time Machine
But also look through the forums for discussions of people restoring their Time Machine shares from backup. I think I remember seeing some people having trouble with it. - ITECHNZAspirantToo easy. Many Thanks. Backing up 'Time Machine' now.
Not sure why I didn't see that option before as have been backing up the shares regularly as they are the primary data source. Guess I'd misread that Time Machine sparsebundles were hidden files in backup share. Maybe they are, but your solution is correct and I thank you.
Cheers, Kevin.
