Backup to a Non-Netgear NAS

I have a ReadyNAS 526X and also have a Drobo 5N2.  I would like to back up the ReadyNAS to the Drobo.  They are both on the same network.

I tried to set up a backup job from the 526X to the Drobo using the Windows NAS Timestamp protocol and designated the Drobo by its IP address.

The ReadyNAS seemed to accept the settings but when I ran the backup job it failed and I got the following message.

ackup Job Name: Drobo=David
Backup Job Type: Full
Protocol: cifs
Backup Source: [David]/
Backup Destination: [remote:cifs]///10.0.1.3/David
Backup Start Time: Tue Aug 29 2017 20:08:02
Backup Finish Time: Tue Aug 29 2017 20:08:07
Backup Status: Fail: Destination cannot be mounted on the system.

Failed to mount remote path //10.0.1.3/David!

My first question is, is it even possible to do this and if so, what am I doing wrong in my setup?

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

David

It gives an error if it can't restore the source file's permissions to the backup.  I remember being confused by that once, but I believe there is a subtle difference in the messages.  I don't have one on hand to look at, though.

The Drobo should support rsync, and you will have better luck with permissions if you use a native Linux protocol like rsync between two Linux systems.

Can you access the David share on the drobo from your PC?  If not, you need to solve that first.

If you can, perhaps use the same user credentials in the backup job that you are using on the PC.

Thanks for the quick reply. It does appear there was an issue with the credentials. I corrected that and I was able to get the David folder to back up. I then tried to back up a folder called Documents and although the backup started it failed almost immediately and I got a message that a folder ._AppleDB could not be created.

When I looked on the Drobo it does look like the backup completed even though I got the error message.

I am now trying to do a single backup of the entire data volume to see if that works.

Does any of that make sense?

The backup of the entire data file is being reported as Failed.

and the backup Log reports the following:

        Backup Job Name: Drobo_Backup
        Backup Job Type: Incremental
        Protocol: cifs
        Backup Source: [volume:data]/
        Backup Destination: [remote:cifs]///10.0.1.3/ReadyNAS526
Backup Start Time: Wed Aug 30 2017 21:38:37
Backup Finish Time: Thu Aug 31 2017 0:44:50
Backup Status: Fail: Failure during copy.

This is followed by a long list of folders that were unable to be copied during the backup as well as a longer list of the items that were copied.

If I look at the target device (the Drobo NAS), it appears that all of the ReadyNAS shares, folders and files are there.

Does that mean that the ReadyNAS is reporting a false failure and the backup is actually completing sussessfully?

        Regards,

        David
