Backup to Windows network share

Hi,

I use ReadyNAS fw 6.5.0 and have setup some backup jobs from ReadyNAS to a network share.
One of the jobs (Type = Full) fails with this error:
Backup Status: Fail: destination is read-only or files/folders could not be created. Check if these files or folders meet the destination file system limitation.
Cannot create file '/job_005/AdminKontor/__foo__.19098' (error: No such file or directory)!

I don't have this file in source directory, so what does it mean?

Counting the files in source and destination are the same, so it looks like backup is done properly.

Thanks,
Tommy

    Hello TommyD,

By looking at the error it seems the destination cannot be overwritten. What's the source and destination of the backup job?

      Hi,

Source is ReadyNAS and destination is a Windows 7 share.
      Backup Source: [Gemensam]/ADMINISTRATION - KONTORET
      Backup Destination: [remote:cifs]///192.168.1.12/Backup/AdminKontor

The strange thing is that I don't have a folder named "job_005" or file named "__foo__.19098" and all files are copied fine from source to destination.
I have deleted all files/folders in destination, but still same error.

      Kind regards,
      Tommy

        Hello TommyD,

Can you check the destination folder on the computer if you can write to it?

        Regards,

  • /job_005 is most likely the mount point of the backup destination on your NAS, set up by the backup job. It's normal that you don't "have" it.
The file __foo__.19098 may be a hidden file that's in your share but you don't see it. You could list the share ADMINISTRATION - KONTORET from your PC with these commands:
    net use "\\<ip_nas>\ADMINISTRATION -KONTORET" /user:<username>
    dir /A:S "\\<ip_nas>\ADMINISTRATION -KONTORET"
    dir /A:H "\\<ip_nas>\ADMINISTRATION -KONTORET"
Do you see that __foo__ file?

      Hi omicron_persei8 and JennC,

I run the dir commands in source folder but could not find any hidden or system file.

I can easily reproduce the "__foo__file" error by:
      1. Create a new folder and file in source.
      2. Create a new backup job (that is only backing up this new folder/file).
      3. Run job. Job runs with Success. Folder and file are created in destination. Job type is Full.
      4. Run job again. Job runs with Success. Job type is Incremental.
      5. Now open settings for the job and change Option tab. From Schedule Full backup "first time" to "every time" and select "Remove the contents of the backup destination before full backup".
      6. Run job again. I now get "Cannot create file '/job_010/test/__foo__.17629' (error: No such file or directory)!"

Could you try to reproduce the error?

      Kind regards,

      Tommy

        Hello TommyD,

I took a glimpse at your profile and found that you have ReadyNAS 300 series units. I think it i best you contact support as this has lifetime CHAT support.

        Regards,
