Bad Firmware solution/alternatives?
I've recently been having problems with my trusty old sparc NV+. A couple of weeks ago it got stuck booting, after running through memory tests etc eventually it reported a bad disk. I removed all the disks and tested with WD software (all are ok). I then received the bad firmware message. I tried the OS reinstall to no avail and have just performed the USB recovery: this seemed to go to plan, alas when I booted up I received the bad firmware message again.
Aside from a factory reset (I'd rather not do this as I know it will wipe the disks and not *everything* on there is backed up) is there anything else I can do?
If not, would I be able to transfer the discs (in X-RAID Config) to another chassis and if so, which models could I use? Thanks.

Hello norliss,
Do you have scratch disk that you can try alone with the chassis? Maybe that will help.
You can only use the disks on another ReadyNAS NV+ sparc-based chassis if you are trying to retrieve the data. Also, the disks you removed from the old chassis should be inserted to their respective bays, do NOT swap them as the order is important. As always, we strongly recommend to always have full backup, storing important files to just one device is not a good idea. It may be hard to get another unit of this NV+ sparc-based as this model joined EOL devices few years ago.

Hi JennC and thanks very much for replying to my message.
I totally hear you on the back-up. The NAS was mostly used to stream music via Logitech Media Server and my music catalogue is backed up multiple times, so that's no worry. Alas the "Video" portion (films ripped from my own DVD/Blu-ray) isn't: I still have the original discs but not the appetite to re-rip them all, but hey. I did have a quick look on ebay for Sparc NV+ units but they're not exactly in great supply, which is hardly surprising given their age.
When you mention a "scratch disk" is this because the suggestion would be to carry out a full factory reset? This is the one thing I have yet to try and I suppose it's the only thing left for me to try now, given none of the other options have been successful....

Correct. Doing a fresh install with a scratch disk would verify the chassis while keeping your data intact.
Another thought - you could mount the array in an x86 linux system (or a PC booted from a linux live cd), and copy of the data that way. http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306
