Big mistake trying to move files between shares?

I am no networking expert but have been using my ReadyNAS duo successfully for over six years to share music, photos, and documents. I decided to re-organize file storage on the NAS so I went into Windows 7 file manager and dragged and dropped my pictures folder from the media share to the backup share. OMG -- the process has been on-going for 24 hours! According to the dialog box I am moving 99,926 items (597 GB). What did I do wrong? Why is it taking soooo long?

On the command prompt after deleting any connections to the NAS using net use you could try something like:

    net use t: \\192.168.1.7\c /user:admin

mdgm's command will map the NAS C volume to the Drive Letter T: on the PC. You should get a password prompt.

You will need to close all windows accessing the NAS on the PC, and disconnect any mapped drive letters to NAS shares to do this.

You might also need to type this first:
    net use * /delete
It doesn't delete anything, it just disconnects any existing network connections

When you are done, you can remove the mapped drive by right-clicking on it (in "Computer"), and choosing "disconnect".
  • thanks everyone -- gotta go to work now but will try these suggestions this evening.
  • Here is what I see when I click volume settings in frontview. As you can see there are no volume letters:

You are using X-RAID which has one volume.

As you can see just to the right of the NETGEAR logo in white text on a purple background there is written "Volume C".

    Did you try the suggestions?
  • Thank you. I will try your suggestions tomorrow -- it's midnight now and I've got to get to bed :)
  • OK, I tried mdgm's suggestion to use "net use t: \\192.168.1.7\c /user:admin" and it worked, though I did not get a password prompt-- it simply created the mapped drive in Windows and allowed me to gain access by double clicking. I see:

Now, what is the trick to drag and drop files in this view without copying back and forth to the PC?

Thanks for all your expert help!

First try opening the "t" drive in two separate windows, navigate into two different shares, and dragging some files between the two windows. That should work like a fast move (be instant).

If for some reason it doesn't, then you can also do these moves using just one window - if you have your windows explorer layout configured to show you the navigation pane on the left.
  • It seems to be working smoothly. Thank you for your patience and expertise- you have helped me understand how this thing works better than any FAQ on the Netgear site.
