OK. This is a bug in the 4.2.19 firmware (See http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=57865). I fixed it by moving to the 4.2.20T42 beta and manually editing /etc/frontview/samba/Shares.conf (I had tried editing it before, but under the 4.2.19 firmware, it is rebuilt every boot, so you need the beta firmware).
