Can only use 100MBit instead of 1Gbit

Btw your recent symptoms definitely suggest flakey hardware. The detection for 1Gb is pretty much if all 4 pairs are present & active across the connection (100mb only needs 2) and is why you would see a Gb connection registered even if you use unsuitable CAT5 cables
So the LEDs occasionally not showing a Gb connection smacks of a Hardware issue - I'd make sure the cables were good as a first option

Oddly enough the issue has resolved itself for now. We had a power cut over night, (very rare round here) and when the NAS restarted itself, it automatically came back on a Gbit connection. I need to get a UPS at the earliest opportunity as I'm exposed to these elements currently, even if they are extremely rare.
I'll just have to keep a look out for any problems in the future.
