If I go the way of converting to OS-6, will I lose the current raid setup and will it wipe out all the files that I currently have on it?
Yes, when you upgrade to OS6, you'll have to manually re-configure the NAS (which isn't a lot for most users) and restore all your files from backup. Yes, it's a lot of work, though hopefully you are keeping a backup already that will help with that, but IMHO it's worth it.
Yes, I've been backing up all my media on raw hard drives since I purchased the NAS.
